Author’s Note:

Um, I guess I should put up a warning since this revolves around death… I wouldn’t say it’s emotional but I know some people have difficulty with it so just thought I’d say it.

~*~

It had been many years. Many decades. Or maybe just many minutes? It was hard to tell in this place. Time didn’t seem to feel to work right.

He had spent all this time, or so little time, staring at the wall. There were lines on the wall, unless they squiggles. He knew if he stared at them long enough it would make sense to him–even though he had no idea whether he was trying to look at words or a picture.

He had been alone all this time, standing here, staring at the wall. Unless it had just been a few minutes. He wasn’t sure, even though he did know how long it had passed out there. He knew a lot of things. Too much.

The split second he no longer alone, he knew it. He felt it. Plus the lines seemed to sharpen, like they were coming into focus. But still not clear enough–far from being clear enough. The answer was still a long ways off. But he was no longer alone.

“Hello Calcifer.”

Jacob turned to face his son, not surprised to see him at the age he was. He had been this age for all this time–or was it not long at all? Had he died just an hour ago? Time out there had passed many, many years. He knew Calcifer had died an old man in his bed.

Calcifer did not know this. He stared at his father–long dead to him–and then frowned. “Hello Dad. Is this a dream?”

Jacob wanted to lie to him, but he knew it wouldn’t be long before Calcifer realized the truth. Better not to lie. “No. It’s not a dream. You’ve died. Painlessly, quick. That, I am grateful for. That you weren’t in pain. But I’m sorry…”

Calcifer stared. “That–that’s a lie. This is a dream!” he snapped, though he felt it to be true. Deep down, he knew when his father said it, that it was the truth. “Ridiculous! You expect me to believe this is Heaven? Or Hell? Huh?!”

Jacob smiled at once, hearing his son’s stubborn streak coming out at once as if nothing had changed. “No, this place is different. This is a different afterlife.” He spread his hands as if to show him, but all there was to show was an empty room with a few very distant, very blurry lines on one wall.

“What sort of afterlife?” Calcifer asked, suddenly too weary to argue. He felt something, and he didn’t like it. “I don’t want a different afterlife–how does that even make sense? Why are we the only two here?”

“Please just relax,” Jacob urged. “I know it’s difficult to understand. I don’t quite understand it myself. I mean… I think I do. Maybe I don’t.” He turned back to face the wall with the lines. “I almost do…”

Calcifer rubbed his temples. “So it’s just you and me, in this room, for eternity?”

Jacob laughed, the sound echoing off the walls. “No. Not for eternity. For not that long. Or maybe it will be eternity. Time is difficult here. But it’s not just here. We have the other afterlife, too. It’s like we’re split in half and if you just relax for a moment you can see the other side. I can… but I prefer staying here.”

Calcifer did close his eyes and he could feel it. A field. He was in a meadow, under a blue sky, Penny close in his arms. He could feel her solid in his arms, her eyes shining as she smiled up at him. “Is it real?” he whispered, looking back at his father. “Or is this real?”

“They both are,” Jacob answered.

“I can see hear, hear her, feel her warm skin…” Calcifer backed away from his father. “How is it? This is–a dream… or… how can I feel her? She…” He didn’t want it to be true but he knew. Deep down, like being here, he knew. “Even if I’m here, she’s just a dream. Isn’t she? Dad? Isn’t she?”

Jacob looked at Calcifer with sorrow in his eyes. “I’m sorry,” he said, wishing he could lie. But like everything else that was to happen, Calcifer would discover the truth.

Calcifer buried his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking as he cried. “No! It’s not true! She can’t be dead!” Except he did know it was true. “She deserved a longer life…”

“You were her life, Calcifer,” Jacob said, finally moving a bit closer to his son. “Just as she was yours.”

Calcifer looked up, swaying a bit. “How did you know about her? You died before I–but you look so young,” he realized then he looked at his hands in wonderment. “I’m young. She’s young, with my other self.”

“Young, healthy, happy,” Jacob said with a smile. “As am I. No pain.” He touched his midriff and sighed. “No pain.” He turned again to face the wall. “Can you see it?”

“All I see are wobbly lines,” replied Calcifer, stepping over to Jacob. “Dad, I’m sorry.”

“Don’t.” Jacob smiled, though he did not look away from the wall. “I know how you feel. I’m sorry you went through what you did.” Finally he turned his head, to meet Calcifer’s gaze. “But never apologize, because you were worth it.”

It hit Calcifer all of a sudden. As if Jacob had opened up and Calcifer could see what was going on inside his mind and heart. Calcifer then thought of his children and grandchildren. Any pain he went through, he knew he’d do it again for them and for Penny. The pain Jacob had gone through, Calcifer knew it was worth it to him.

“Why are we here?” Calcifer whispered. “You and me? Just the two of us?”

“It won’t be just the two of us for long,” Jacob assured him then he paused, tapping his chin. “Or maybe it will be a very long time. You’ll soon realize that time acts strange here. Sometimes it feels like moments ago that I had you, sometimes it feels like moments since my death. Sometimes it feels like centuries. You’ll feel it soon. But you don’t see anything?” He waved his hand at the wall.

Calcifer shook his head. “No, just lines. Or squiggles. They keep changing. What do we do? This is hell, then, to spend eternity in a room with nothing.” He shivered, feeling a strange sensation in his stomach. It had already been an eternity since he stepped into the room. Hadn’t he been standing here, talking to his father for at least ten years now?

“You’re not completely here,” Jacob pointed out. “Go, relax, concentrate on the other place. Spend time with Penny. Don’t worry if anyone else shows up, you’ll be able to tell who’s real and who’s not.” Then Jacob laughed. “I guess I should say, who is dead and who is not. I sometimes felt you there, but it was a shadow of you. I sometimes had Elouia there, but she was real.”

Calcifer frowned. “What are you going to do? Spend eternity by yourself? Why aren’t you in the other place?”

“I am there, but only barely,” Jacob sighed. “I’ve stopped concentrating on it a thousand years ago. Or yesterday. This is more urgent.” He sat down on the floor, staring at the wall. Calcifer looked too but he could see only lines. Wobbly, indistinct lines that could be anything. A picture of a horse, or words of a poem.

“What is it?” Calcifer asked, sitting down next to his father.

“The answer.”

“The answer to what?”

Jacob smiled, resting his chin on his hand. “Precisely. Go spend time with Penny. I won’t be alone with you here, even if you’re not completely here. And we won’t be alone much longer.”

Calcifer fixed his gaze on the wall and it was there: the wall, the lines, as he ran through the meadow with Penny, sometimes just the two of them but sometimes with the kids and grandkids at varying ages, all pale shadows as Jacob said. Not dead, but memories.

The bright sun shone down on them, warming their bodies, lighting their paths. Sometimes it was cloudy; sometimes it snowed and they threw snowballs at each other and made snow angels; sometimes it rained, and they would dance, laughing, loving.

But the wall and the lines were always there. Waiting.

I love the way you presented this chapter in such a unique way

  2. :O Very curious, can’t wait to see what happens with this! Great idea to get them all together 🙂

  3. Jazen says:

Cool! What’s on the wall? Now I need to know, it’s the answer to what????

  4. NicoleKatherine says:

This was an excellent and completely amazing chapter, I really enjoyed it. It was so unique and so different. Great job! I can’t wait to see where you go with this! 😀

Thanks! And thanks for commenting, too. I always like to hear from my readers!
I’m really glad you liked it, and everyone else (who has commented) seems to like it (plus those who have clicked like). I was both super excited and super nervous! Haha.

  5. Anon says:

What inspired you to write this?

    • sErindeppity says:

      Nothing in particular.
      ……
Maybe a little bit of Doctor Who. -laughs- I knew I wanted to include Jacob at the end of the entire story but wasn’t sure how to do that. Then I realized that what I was thinking for the final plot was really something else (hard to explain, without giving away what happens). And I figured out what to do with Jacob, and then when I was writing this chapter I knew I wanted him to have been staring at something for however long it’s been. Even though I am not a big fan of the Eleventh Doctor (I am a huge Doctor Who fan, I grew up on it since my parents had been such fans of it when it was on) I thought of the crack in the wall and thought maybe it could be something on the wall, and then when I figured out what it really was–I thought of the ‘lines’.
Sorry for that long answer, but I hope it answers your question. I didn’t get really inspired by anything and then when I finished taking pictures for it, I realized it was rather Dumbledore/Harry Potter/King’s Cross–though I didn’t even think about that until after it was done. Though that was not my intention at all.

I know I’ve become too attached to the story when I think of Jacob, Calcifer, and Penny in an afterlife I want to cry.. T_T Great writing as always 🙂

    • sErindeppity says:

      Thank you :3
It makes me want to cry too…. if you feel like crying or do cry, as I said to someone else–it’s probably made me cry too.
As people can probably guess, there will be more of these segments 😉 though… hopefully not for a while.

  7. JourneyG says:

Um… Need to know more of what’s going on! But I’ll wait.

Did I tell you Jacob crashed my sims birthday party the other week. I found it really odd. but funny.

    • sErindeppity says:

Lol, the next segment won’t be for hopefully a while! So everyone will have to go on wondering for some time.
LOL that is hilarious that he crashed your party. xD -giggles-

  8. inspiritsgolden says:

hehe scrolling down to comment i see you watch doctor who? 😀

anyways, brilliant! i love the way you wrote this and it was random in a good way? it wasn’t random, no, i can’t think of the correct word. unpredictable maybe? a good twist? i hope you catch my drift.

    • sErindeppity says:

I think I understand what you mean, thank you ^__^
Yes I watch Dr. Who. I grew up on it x3 My dad watched it pretty much from when it first started, and my mom liked it too so… yeah. Some of my very earliest memories involves the show x3 I was uber excited when they restarted it. I’m an obsessed fan ahaha.

  9. gladissims says:

When I read this chapter it actually made me shiver a little. It is a scary though sitting in a all white room with time flowing weirdly. I would freak out! Lol, must have something to do with my ADHD… anyway I still love this chapter even though it was giving me kind of the creeps. =)

  10. gladissims says:

True, but still… I would rather not exist than sitting in a white room…

  11. Cereline says:

I wonder if as the more generation heirs die, they’re sent to that white room and each time the words/squiggles ont he wall become more distinct until finally, after 10 generations, it’s legible and they find the ANSWER! To whatever… (From the aliens? Ha…just kidding.) Anyway this was quite the nifty chapter. 🙂

    • sErindeppity says:

You may be right… there is one thing in your comment that is wrong though. The Danevbies are gonna last 13 generations 😉 other than that, I won’t say whether you were right or wrong lol. Glad you liked the chapter!

  12. That’s very clever and touching 🙂

  13. thelizzy1990 says:

I squealed so loud when I saw Jacob that my cats are looking at me strange now. lol.

Very strange chapter, but I like it. It’s comforting to know that we’ll be seeing more of Cal and Jacob in the future. Although I guess that will be when Luna dies? 😦

  14. Mia says:

Can the answer PLEASE be 42? 🙂

I found this a little… odd? But I liked it.

    • sErindeppity says:

I am so gonna put “42” on the wall at some point, kinda hidden. See if anyone sees it. x] it’s all I could think of when I was writing that bit. Douglas Adams is… well… epic. ❤
And yeah it was odd haha but I am glad you liked it :3

  15. mewmewmentor says:

This is the chapter where I cried for Penny and Cal. Not the previous one. This one.

I don’t even know if they are happy or sad tears. Maybe both.

A mark of a great author is when they can make me cry.

    • sErindeppity says:

I feel very honored, then 🙂
This was an emotional chapter for me, both happy and sad; and the other ??? chapters are going to be like this. Both good and sad. 😦

  16. Jay did it, didn’t she? Now that I’ve gotten my paranoia out of the way, what a touching chapter

  17. Zhippidy says:

Beautiful, intriguing, mysterious and calm. ^_^

  18. jonso says:

Ahh it’s both beautiful and sad – heaven and hell at the same time. Where time has no meaning yet flows in an endless rubato. Is it weird that when I saw the second picture I knew right away it was Jacob’s frame? 🙂 ❤

  19. zefiewings says:

Why…do I want to blame Jay for this?

  20. yellowberries says:

I must say, I’ll be slightly disappointed if 42 is not included in the answer somewhere. Aaahhh, no I won’t be, but I’d laugh until I cried xD This is a very interesting depiction of the afterlife. I’ve never seen anything like it. I know its a stretch…but does Jay want them to solve the answer? Or find the question? Though how Jay would know what the afterlife holds in beyond me. Either way, I’m glad father (mother?) and son are together again :’)

    • sErindeppity says:

Reply in full later but I will say one of the walls in one of the ??? chapters has 42 written on it -grins- very vaguely. I’ve written loads of words and numbers on it in great looping, stuttering ways. 42 was one of them!! huhuhu

    • sErindeppity says:

      Reply in full now hehe
I’m glad you enjoyed this chapter. I love the afterlife chapter so much, even though it always pains me to write them 😦 it is great that Jacob and Calcifer are together again, and Calcifer understands what he didn’t really when he was alive.
As for whether Jay’s involved or not… eheehe

  21. somebodysangel13 says:

It is a bit Dumbledore/Harry Potter/Kings Cross, but I think it works. Adding more mystery to the overall storyline. Obviously there is something special in the line that’s being carried down through the heirs, and I’m excited to find out what it is.
Though, is it bad that I want Luna and Seb in there RFN, so that we can get some more pieces in the puzzle? *is so not patient*

On another note, I added the Reddings and some Danevbies to my legacy world. Which is an alternate, flatter Sunset Valley (atm, have had to move a few times due to game issues). I have Luna, Viola and Seb as siblings, and Serenity as Seb’s daughter. We’ll see what Story Progression does with them!

    • sErindeppity says:

Yeah I realized after that they seemed a bit like that xD it was completely not my intention though. Hopefully the reason behind them being in there helps… although it won’t be discovered for a while.
I don’t think it’s bad because even though it makes me SO SAD when my heirs die… I also get a little excited to write another ??? chapter. Though when gen 6 dies I… I don’t know what I’ll do. Gen six is my favorite and that ??? chapter is one I am not wanting to write T_T
Ahhhhh Reddings and Danevbies in your town! A flatter Sunset Valley? Oooooh. I love Sunset Valley but it’s so mountainty. Is the flatter one causing the issues or is it other game glitches? If the flat one isn’t causing too many problems… could you possibly link me? I love the neighborhood and a flatter version would be so fun!
Ahh hopefully story progression gives them some fun times! 😀

  22. somebodysangel13 says:

You make a good point, at least with these ??? chapters the heirs get to meet their parents (and ancestors) again, and be happy in the afterlife.

No, the world isn’t causing issues, I think it was bad CC – in the process of weeding out whatever it was. And also I got annoyed when there were too many blood relatives in the town, so moved them away. But I love this world, which is here: http://forum.thesims3.com/jforum/posts/list/427474.page
It’s completely empty, and completely flat, so you can add lots wherever you like. It doesn’t have the Sunset Valley families, but of course you can add them if you like.

So far for the Danevbies, Seb hooked up with Simself Dan Schobbes and Luna is the boyfriend of Keppel, a spare in gen 4 of my legacy! Jay and Kay also have significant others; J is the girlfriend of Barbosa Bathory (from the Bathory Legacy http://bathorylegacy.wordpress.com/index/) and K married his sister Misa.

    • sErindeppity says:

They do get to be happy… for the time being… ;D we’ll see what happens at the end! :3
Ahhhh thank you for the link! I’ll have to download it as soon as I can. I love flat worlds. Maybe that’s one reason I like Lucky Palms as much as I do, it’s fairly flat. Ironic, though, considering I could never live in a flat place myself. I’m an Appalachian girl, born and raised. I have a vague phobia of seeing a flat horizon in real life. It’s weird. It just makes me so… nervous and edgy! But I think it’s because of my agoraphobia/fear of wide open spaces. But now I am rambling about me. Whoops. Sorry!!!
Seb is with your simself? Or someone else’s simself? Thank you for the info about what’s going on in your game! It makes me so ecstatic to hear others are having fun with Danevbies in their game! And the Reddings. ^__^

      • somebodysangel13 says:

Flat worlds are sooo much easier than hilly ones. SV and Twinbrook really annoy me like that, because there’s very little room for extra lots.

No, I don’t have a simself (as yet). Seb is with another simself from another legacy writer.
I’m surprised that J hooked up with someone, though if anyone, a Bathory works, given that’s a villain legacy.

      • sErindeppity says:

HAH! A villain is perfect for her ahaha
